Chapter 5: Customs and traditions

The materials provided in this section of the website support Chapter 5 of the English B for the IB Diploma coursebook: ‘Customs and traditions’. This is one of five chapters which cover the topic options in the IB English B syllabus.

The materials can be used to supplement and extend the coursebook content, and links to the appropriate coursebook pages are given on individual resources.

All materials, apart from image resources, give the choice of either PDF or Word format, which can be printed out and used as given, or edited to suit your needs. Student worksheets can be printed and completed by hand, or supplied to students in editable format, to allow them to be completed on-screen, and then printed out or saved as digital documents. Lesson plans are likewise supplied in an editable Word format, as well as PDF, for teachers to adapt to their own needs.

The materials are grouped into three categories, from which you can select from the menus above.

For Chapter 5, you will find the following range of materials:


Lesson plan 5.1: an overview and planning document for Chapter 5.
Lesson plan 5.2: an editable lesson plan template, which can be used to create your own lesson plans for the topic option ‘Customs and tradition’.


Assessment sheet 5.1: provides answers and exemplar responses to the activities in Chapter 5.
Assessment sheet 5.2: this worksheet helps students prepare for the individual oral by creating a clear structure for their presentation.
Assessment sheet 5.3: students are asked to consider what makes a good image, as a way of preparing for the individual oral presentation.
Assessment sheet 5.4: provides support to help students assess the sample individual oral presentation using the audio recording (Audio file 5.1, in the Resources section: filename IB_elb_5_resources_audio) and the transcript on pages 199–201 of the coursebook.

The optional editable Word format enables students to complete the assessment activities on-screen.


Students are provided with the following worksheets to support their work in this core topic:

Worksheet 5.1: a starter activity for Unit 5.1, in which students explore the meaning of the term ‘pilgrimage’.
Worksheet 5.2: this worksheet supports Activity 1.11, on page 176 of the coursebook, with exercises to help students understand the difference between nouns, adjectives and verbs.
Worksheet 5.3: this worksheet supports Activity 1.12, on page 176 of the coursebook, with exercises in the use of the gerund verb form to make longer sentences.
Worksheet 5.4: provides a template for students to design a school uniform, to support Activity 2.3 on page 184 of the coursebook.
Worksheet 5.5: for use with Activity 2.7on page 186, words from Text 5.5 are grouped according to common themes.
Audio file 5.1: a recording of the sample individual oral activity on pages 199–201 of the coursebook.
