Chapter 4: Cultural diversity

The materials provided in this section of the website support Chapter 4 of the English B for the IB Diploma coursebook: ‘Cultural diversity’. This is one of five chapters which cover the topic options in the IB English B syllabus.

The materials can be used to supplement and extend the coursebook content, and links to the appropriate coursebook pages are given on individual resources.

All materials, apart from image resources, give the choice of either PDF or Word format, which can be printed out and used as given, or edited to suit your needs. Student worksheets can be printed and completed by hand, or supplied to students in editable format, to allow them to be completed on-screen, and then printed out or saved as digital documents. Lesson plans are likewise supplied in an editable Word format, as well as PDF, for teachers to adapt to their own needs.

The materials are grouped into three categories, from which you can select from the menus above.

For Chapter 4, you will find the following range of materials:


Lesson plan 4.1: an overview and planning document for Chapter 4.
Lesson plan 4.2: an editable lesson plan template, which can be used to create your own lesson plans for the topic option ‘Cultural diversity’.


Assessment sheet 4.1: provides answers and exemplar responses to the activities in Chapter 4.
Assessment sheet 4.2: using PIE structure in essay writing, with reference to Text 4.8.
Assessment sheet 4.3: provides students with a template for writing an outline for a ‘5-paragraph’ essay.

The optional editable Word format enables students to complete the assessment activities on-screen.


Students are provided with the following worksheets to support their work in this core topic:

Worksheet 4.1: a starter activity for Unit 4.1, in which students explore the meaning of the term ‘immigrant’.
Worksheet 4.2: students consider the purpose of a text, and what the writer is trying to achieve, analysing Text 4.1as an example – this worksheet can be used to support Activity 1.9 on page 139.
Worksheet 4.3: a crossword activity using words and their synonyms from Text 4.7.
Worksheet 4.4: this worksheet supports Unit 4.2, and helps students understand the use of the present simple and present continuous verb forms, with reference to Text 4.6.
Worksheet 4.5: introduces students to the idea of annotating a text, and provides a copy of Text 4.5 to annotate.
Worksheet 4.5: provides students with a template for a ‘Know, Want, Learn’ table, which can be used with any text being studied.
