Chapter 7: Leisure

The materials provided in this section of the website support Chapter 7 of the English B for the IB Diploma coursebook: ‘Leisure’. This is one of five chapters which cover the topic options in the IB English B syllabus.

The materials can be used to supplement and extend the coursebook content, and links to the appropriate coursebook pages are given on individual resources.

All materials, apart from image resources, give the choice of either PDF or Word format, which can be printed out and used as given, or edited to suit your needs. Student worksheets can be printed and completed by hand, or supplied to students in editable format, to allow them to be completed on-screen, and then printed out or saved as digital documents. Lesson plans are likewise supplied in an editable Word format, as well as PDF, for teachers to adapt to their own needs.

The materials are grouped into three categories, from which you can select from the menus above.

For Chapter 7, you will find the following range of materials:

Planning

Lesson plan 7.1: an overview and planning document for Chapter 7.
Lesson plan 7.2: an editable lesson plan template, which can be used to create your own lesson plans for the topic option ‘Leisure’.

Assessment

Assessment sheet 7.1: provides answers and exemplar responses to the activities in Chapter 7.
Assessment sheet 7.2: assessing the sample response to specimen Paper 2, on pages 271–72 of the coursebook, using the assessment criteria.

The optional editable Word format enables students to complete the assessment activities on-screen.

Resources

Students are provided with the following worksheets to support their work in this core topic:

Worksheet 7.1: for use with Activity 1.6 on page 242 of the coursebook, students consider the kinds of information they would find in a biography.
Worksheet 7.2: this worksheet provides a copy of Text 7.4 ‘Top 10 Incredibly Dangerous sports’ for annotation, as an example of reading a text for formality.
Worksheet 7.3: for use with Activity 2.6 on page 256 of the coursebook, this worksheet uses phrases from Text 7.4 to explore meaning.
Worksheet 7.4: provides a copy of the ‘bulls-eye’ diagram on page 258 of the coursebook, for use with any text being studied, to help identify the most important words.
Worksheet 7.5: provides a template for students to use when designing their own brochure, for Activities 3.4 and 3.5 on page 267 of the coursebook.
