Chapter 3: Social relationships

The materials provided in this section of the website support Chapter 3 of the English B for the IB Diploma coursebook: ‘Social relationships’. This is the last of three chapters which cover the core topics of the IB English B syllabus.

The materials can be used to supplement and extend the coursebook content, and links to the appropriate coursebook pages are given on individual resources.

All materials, apart from image resources, give the choice of either PDF or Word format, which can be printed out and used as given, or edited to suit your needs. Student worksheets can be printed and completed by hand, or supplied to students in editable format, to allow them to be completed on-screen, and then printed out or saved as digital documents. Lesson plans are likewise supplied in an editable Word format, as well as PDF, for teachers to adapt to their own needs.

The materials are grouped into three categories, from which you can select from the menus above.

For Chapter 3, you will find the following range of materials:


Lesson plan 3.1: an overview and planning document for Chapter 3.
Lesson plan 3.2: an editable lesson plan template, which can be used to create your own lesson plans for the core topic of ‘Social relationships’.


Assessment sheet 3.1: provides answers and exemplar responses to the activities in Chapter 3, including the answers to the questions on the two specimen exam papers, on pages 118–21 and 128–33 of the coursebook.
Assessment sheet 3.2: questions for specimen Paper 1 (SL), for students to complete. The answers are given in Assessment sheet 3.1.
Assessment sheet 3.3: questions for specimen Paper 1 (HL), for students to complete. The answers are given in Assessment sheet 3.1.
Assessment sheet 3.4: support for assessing, and giving feedback on, another student’s work, using letters produced for Activity 3.4 on page 112 of the coursebook.

The optional editable Word format enables students to complete the assessment activities on-screen.


Students are provided with the following worksheets to support their work in this core topic:

Worksheet 3.1: support for researching the topic of Indian reservations in Unit 3.1.
Worksheet 3.2: an exercise in using punctuation in quotations, linked to Activity 2.12 on page 102 of the coursebook.
Worksheet 3.3: linked to the ‘Reading strategy’ feature on page 104 of the coursebook, this resource can be used when analysing any text to identify bias.
Worksheet 3.4: supporting Activities 3.1 and 3.2 on pages 107 and 109 of the coursebook, this worksheet provides a copy of Text 3.7 for students to annotate and mark up to help their analysis.
Worksheet 3.5: writing tips and exercises, using a copy of Text 3.8 for students to annotate, to support Activities 3.2 and 3.3 on page 109 of the coursebook.
